HOW TO BE FINANCIALLY SECURE
by Christopher S. Deatherage, N.D.
As a naturopathic doctor I am interested in treating the whole person which includes the physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental state of my patients. Because financial stress is such a major part of ill health and loss of quality of life for so many I see, the following financial principles I have learned from my elders may be of help to those who struggle financially.
Live On A Strict Budget
It is impossible to be financially secure without a written budget. Start with your income – then list your monthly expenses. Every week lay aside the needed funds for your expenses and do not use them for anything except your needs and wants for which you have budgeted. This will take tremendous discipline, but it is the only way you can control excessive spending and have money for your family’s needs and wants.
Buy Quality Things and Take Care of What You Have
I advise people to study the habits of the poor and do the opposite. One of the bad habits of so many poor people is they buy low quality things and then do not take care of what they have. By purchasing the best quality you can afford and taking meticulous care of such, you will save hundreds of thousands of dollars by not having to repurchase.
Become Debt Free
Never borrow money for anything except for a home and possibly a quality vehicle. Excessive debt will make it impossible to be financially secure and is one of the greatest stresses on a marriage. Study the books by author Dave Ramsey on how to become debt free.
Study the Habits of the Rich
According to the best-selling book , The Millionaire Next Door, wealthy people do not live like you have been taught. Most wealthy people live on a strict budget and below their means, do not drive luxury automobiles, are generous to the deserving poor, and most often live in middle class houses. Most wealthy people I know are also extremely disciplined individuals.
Study the Bible on Money Management
How often I hear the Bible misquoted that money is the root of all evil. Scripture actually says that the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil (1 Timothy 6:10 NASV).
In summary from Christian Financial Concepts. What does the Bible say about managing money? The answer can be summarized with a single word – wisdom. We are to be wise with our money. We are to save money, but not hoard it. We are to spend money, but with discretion and control. We are to give back to the Lord joyfully. We are to use our money to help others, but with discernment and the guidance of God’s Spirit.
It is not wrong to be rich, but it is wrong to love money. It is not wrong to be poor, but is wrong to waste money on trivial things.
The Bible’s consistent message on managing money is to be wise.
