Article:
THE CASE AGAINST SUGAR
by Dr. Christopher S. Deatherage N.D
In his book, “The Case Against Sugar” investigative science and health journalist Gary Taubes gives convincing evidence against the use of sugar in the diet. His key arguments are as follows.
- Sugar is a toxin not a food that depletes the body of essential vitamins and minerals.
- Even small amounts of sugar in the diet /causes insulin resistance and diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, dementia, Alzheimer's, etc.
- Sugar is as addictive as cocaine, activating the brain’s reward pathways which encourages continual sugar consumption.
- Industry influence—Taubes details the history of the powerful sugar industry’s efforts to manipulate public opinion and influence scientific research and health policies. The industry allegedly funded faulty science that shifted the blame for diseases caused by sugar consumption on dietary fat, etc, while promoting sugar as a harmless essential part of the diet.
- Historical and epidemiological evidence—Taubes presents historical and global data showing a strong correlation between the rise of sugar consumption in different populations and the subsequent surge in western diseases. Periods of sugar scarcity during wartime rationing were marked by declines in these diseases.
